Why do you need to learn to Tow?
Any person holding a B Licence may only tow a trailer provided that the maximum combined weight of the trailer and load does not exceed 750kg.
In order to legally tow a trailer up to 3,500kg, you must hold a category BE Licence.
To aquire a BE Licence you must:
- Apply for your DTT if you have not completed it within the last 5 years.
- Apply for your Learner Permit, Category BE.
- Take some Towing Lessons with a qualified ADI, there are no set number of lessons laid down by the RSA for this tuition, your ADI will advise you when you are ready to apply for the Driving Test.
- The driving test requirements are as follows:Vehicle – 4 Wheel Drive or a minimum of 4.25m in length.
Trailer – Minimum weight 800kg, minimum length 2.4m with a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the motor vehicle and must carry 30 x 4 inch solid concrete blocks.
